Buss Offshore Solutions and Orange Blue Terminal host the planning and implementation of port logistics for Merkur wind farm

GE and Orange Blue Terminal, part of the Buss Group, sign agreement for the Merkur wind farm / Buss Offshore Solutions to host project planning and management as well as engineering / Storage and provision of all components, along with the pre-assembly of towers, to be effected using special heavy-duty equipment at the Orange Blue Terminal / Initial components to be supplied in the coming weeks

Hamburg. In September, the Orange Blue Terminal operated by the Hamburg-based Buss Group signed an agreement with GE Renewable Energy to provide base port services for the Merkur Wind Farm project. The offshore project management and consultancy firm Buss Offshore Solutions, based in Hamburg, is taking over project planning and management for the base port operations as well as the engineering of the tower foundations, also assisting the Orange Blue Terminal with the storage design and layout.

"We are delighted that GE has decided to use our terminal as its base port for the Merkur wind farm. It offers the ideal conditions thanks to its location and facilities. We will be contributing our combined expertise and experience derived from no fewer than twelve successfully implemented major international projects," says Martin Schulz, Managing Director of Buss Offshore Solutions.

The Merkur wind farm will encompass 66 GE Haliade 150-6MW wind turbines. The total of 198 tower sections and rotor blades, as well as the 66 nacelles, will be gradually transported over the coming weeks to Eemshaven and the Orange Blue Terminal. They will be stored there on the terminal's premises. Before the installation vessel takes the components to the wind farm, the towers will be pre-assembled at the terminal and set up on the tower foundations engineered and built especially for this project. The tower foundation has a capacity to pre-assemble eight complete towers. The other components will be prepared for installation and transported to the installation vessel at the quayside.

"Our terminal is perfectly equipped to handle offshore logistics projects. We use special heavy-duty equipment such as the LHM 600 crane, which has a lifting capacity of 208 tonnes. To transport the components to the storage area, we use a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT). This state-of-the-art modular vehicle with 24 axle lines and its own propulsion system helps us with the challenging job of positioning the large components in the storage area. We have also arranged a LR1600 crawler crane for this project, which we will use alongside the LHM 600 to erect and assemble the towers," says Martin van den Heuvel, Managing Director of the Orange Blue Terminal.

Installation of the turbines is set to commence first quarter 2018. The Merkur wind farm is scheduled for completion at the end of 2018 and will generate around 1,750 Gigawatt hours of electricity a year, supplying around 500,000 homes with clean energy.
