As proud distributors of Astell&Kern, we have always admired the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence in high-resolution audio. Each product in their lineup is designed with a distinct identity, pushing the boundaries of design, technology, and pure sound quality.

The PD10 marks an exciting new chapter in Astell&Kern’s journey. Breaking away from the conventional, their latest DAP introduces a fresh design philosophy while staying true to the brand’s uncompromising commitment to optimal sound. With a reimagined take on the iconic volume wheel and an even more intuitive user experience, the PD10 is a bold evolution in digital audio players.

Key features of the PD10 include:

Complete Separation of Digital and Analog Signals in a HEXA-Audio Circuitry Structure

Astell&Kern equipped the PD10 with the same innovative HEXA audio circuit design first developed for the flagship SP3000.  The PD10 consists of four AKM AK4498EX DACs and two separate AK4191EQ chips that handle digital signals.  The PD10 is the world’s first DAP incorporating the newly released AK4498EX chip.

Most digital players process digital and analog signals together inside the DAC. However, Astell&Kern’s advanced HEXA structure reduces the noise of the digital signal input through the AK4191EQ, a separate digital delta-sigma modulator, and the AK4498EX DAC is then designed to process the analog signals separately.

By physically and perfectly separating digital and analog signal processing, the PD10 delivers an astonishing level of sound that has seldom been experienced before.

Stunning Audio Performance with Independent Dual Audio Circuits

To create not just a great DAP, but a truly innovative DAP, Astell&Kern worked to overcome the limitations of sound by designing an independent dual audio circuit for unbalanced and balanced outputs.

Almost all other DAPs use the same internal DAC for both unbalanced and balanced outputs. Since the signal from the DAC is divided into unbalanced and balanced then delivered to the AMP, an Audio Switch is essential.  When using a switch, there is a limit to the range of signal sent by the DAC, so most DAPs reduce the signal size first and then when the signal is transmitted back to the amplifier, it is necessary to restore the original signal size. This causes a limitation in improving the audio performance.

By creating two separate audio circuits, one for balanced output and a second for unbalanced output, Astell&Kern maximizes audio performance no matter what output is being used.

Impedance-Adaptive Dual Amplifiers

To cater to the diverse listening environments of users, the PD10 is equipped with two distinct amplifiers.  Different sound tunings have been applied to each amp, taking into consideration the average impedance of connected earphones and headphones.

The Normal Gain AMP reproduces delicate details and delivers high-purity sound, faithfully reproducing the original sound.

The High Gain AMP excels in handling complex and dynamic sounds, rendering audio signals more vividly and with greater clarity for a more immersive listening experience.

By incorporating two distinct amplifiers in a single player, users can tailor the sound based on the earphones and headphones used.

Smart Gain – Automatic Amplifier Matching Mode

The moment a headphone or earphone is connected to the PD10, the player instantly checks the impedance of the connected device and automatically sets the appropriate AMP.

Regardless of which earphones or headphones are connected, the PD10 automatically distinguishes between low and high impedance and matches it with the optimal AMP, without the user having to worry about manually changing settings to find the optimal match.

Earphones with an impedance of 32ohm or less are set to Normal Gain, providing a maximum output of 5.5Vrms when connected to the balanced output, and earphones greater than 32ohm are set to High Gain, providing ample output of up to 8.3Vrms for balanced out.

The Smart Gain function optimizes amplifier matching, providing audio enthusiasts who own a wide variety of headphones and earphones with a unique and refined listening experience.

Home Audio Integration with Docking Cradle

The included docking cradle transforms the PD10 into a high-fidelity home audio source. Featuring XLR balanced outputs, simultaneous charging, and digital signal input via USB, it seamlessly integrates with two-channel audio systems or powered speakers. The LED display on the cradle provides real-time bit-rate information.

Advanced Features for Ultimate Convenience

  • 6-inch Full HD Touchscreen – A stunning 1080×2160 display for an intuitive user experience.
  • 256GB Internal Storage – Expandable via microSD up to 2TB.
  • High-Resolution Audio Support – Native playback of PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512.
  • Bluetooth 5.3 with High-Resolution Codecs – Supports aptX HD, LHDC, and LDAC for wireless 24-bit audio.
  • BT Sink Mode – Use the PD10 as a Bluetooth DAC for high-quality playback from external devices.
  • ReplayGain – Uniform volume adjustment across music tracks.
  • AK File Drop & AirPlay Support – Wireless file transfer and Apple device integration.
  • Roon Ready Certification – Seamless integration with Roon for music library management.

  • Power Delivery 3.0 (PD 3.0) – Fast charging in approximately 3.5 hours, with up to 15 hours of playback.
  1.

Sleek and Intuitive Design

Inspired by the ‘Contrast Cube’ concept, the PD10 combines stainless steel and glass for a sophisticated look. For the first time in an Astell&Kern DAP, the volume wheel has been replaced with buttons, creating a clean and minimalist look while using distinct material contrast to draw the user’s attention to the control buttons.

Designed for effortless one-handed operation, the PD10 delivers both form and function in a premium package.

The PD10 is now available for pre-order on our website.

In-ear headphones, or IEMs (“In-Ear monitors”), are extremely popular due to their compact size, lightweight design, and great portability. Whether as a true wireless version or traditional wired IEMs, both options have their appeal – though the former has become an almost ubiquitous sight in everyday life.

Audiophiles, however, still prefer wired in-ear headphones for their lossless audio signal transmission. Yet in the end, both versions share one important trait: they deliver excellent sound quality in a highly compact form factor.

However, there’s one small yet extremely important detail that many people overlook, and it’s what I’d like to talk about today: the eartips!

An in-ear headphone may look great on the spec sheet, perform well technically, and receive glowing reviews, but excellent sound quality is still far from guaranteed for every persons’ ear!

This isn’t just because we all hear differently (though that’s certainly true), but due to the fact that many people don’t realize how crucial a perfect “seal” – that is, an ideal fit and seal in the ear canal – is for the sound quality of IEMs. Even when they do know, they sometimes struggle to find the right eartips that truly fit.

Do you fall into this category? If so, keep reading!

Eartips come in a variety of materials – not just the common silicone or foam options, but also more modern innovations like “liquid silicone” or hybrid designs with an inner silicone section and a foam outer layer. The industry continues to innovate, constantly striving to improve our listening experience.

In general, it can be said that foam tips tend to provide better isolation from the outside world and may even deliver stronger bass. That happens because the foam can “actively” adapt to the shape of the ear, sealing the ear canal completely. However, foam tips can sometimes reduce the brilliance in higher frequencies, which can also be an intentional advantage, depending on the IEM and personal preference, of course.

In contrast, with traditional silicone tips, users often need to find their own perfect size for an optimal fit.

The most important factor, however, is not (just) the material but primarily the size, width, and length of the eartips. These need to fit both your ear canal as well as the specific IEM you are using. Not only are our ear canals as unique as a fingerprint, but every in-ear monitor also differs in shape, design, and especially the length of the nozzle – the part where the tips are attached – which plays a crucial role.

With a longer nozzle, the use of shorter tips may be an advantage, depending on the shape of the ear canal. For short(er) nozzles, the opposite is usually true. In addition to achieving optimal sealing, it’s essential to ensure high wearing comfort – after all, the goal is to enjoy excellent sound quality for an extended period of time, without pain.

As a general rule, you should always try out the tips included by the manufacturer. In some cases, this might already suffice if the right and optimal sizes for you are provided. Some manufacturers even include a wider variety of sizes in the box, rather than limiting the selection to the standard sizes “S,” “M,” and “L”.

Important: Try different sizes for each ear! It’s common for different sizes to achieve the perfect seal for the left and right ears. Personally, I often use size “M” in my left ear and size “L” in my right ear, depending on the model. I do that simply because my ear canals are different in size and slightly different in shape, too.

Another tip, especially for users of true wireless in-ear models that come with an app: many manufacturers now include a “fit test” feature in their apps. This can help determine the optimal size of ear tips by running a quick test to evaluate how well the selected tips fit and seal.

If the included tips don’t deliver the desired or optimal result, there’s a vast range of ear tips available from third-party manufacturers such as “SpinFit”, “Azla”, “Comply”, “FiiO”, “Dunu”, or “Divinus”, to name just a few of the more well-known options (and there are, of course, many more!).

If you decide to take your in-ear headphones a bit more seriously, it’s almost inevitable to purchase a few eartips on a trial-and-error basis and test them out at your own pace. While this may initially involve some additional costs, it also allows you to identify which shapes and sizes suit your ears best. Once you’ve built a personal collection of eartips, every future in-ear purchase becomes a relaxed and sonically rewarding experience!

Final tip: Always pay close attention to the manufacturer’s specifications when buying eartips! Most manufacturers provide a chart that details the width, height, and length of the eartips for each individual size. This is important because, as if things weren’t complicated enough, these dimensions can vary between manufacturers.

Happy experimenting and enjoy your listening experience!

In 1958, John C. Koss set out to replicate the feeling of a live musical performance. His invention, the Koss SP/3, would go on to redefine the hi-fi landscape forever.

Music listening in the 50’s

In modern days, very few of us can imagine a life without headphones. But in 1958, the term of “personal listening” didn’t really exist, and music was more of a social concept.

For most people, the only way to experience music was through large home speaker systems or public jukeboxes. Radios were common too, but they were typically mono, offering a single-channel sound. And, while headphones had been around since the 1880s, they were mostly used for voice communications, to improve audio clarity and keep conversations private.

Back then, achieving high-fidelity was only possible through complex speaker setups that were not only very costly, but also heavily influenced by the acoustics of the room they were placed in.

Jazz musician and entrepreneur John C. Koss, driven by his desire to recreate the immersive experience of live music, partnered with engineer Martin Lange, Jr. to develop a portable stereo phonograph player with side-wing speakers. Koss envisioned a way for people to privately experience the richness of stereo sound, which ultimately lead to the invention of the world’s first high fidelity stereophone.

Koss and Lange revealed their new phonograph at a Milwaukee audio show, but it was the bundled SP/3 headphones – originally meant as an accessory to showcase stereo sound – that stole the spotlight.

Designed with purpose

The Koss SP/3 marked the start of a new era of music listening. Designed with a lightweight plastic frame and an open-back structure, they were the complete opposite of the bulky, heavy headphones of that time.

As they were purpose-built for music, the SP/3 were engineered to have a wide, smooth frequency response, delivering a wide soundstage and a natural, detailed sound reproduction. One of the most innovative features of the SP/3 was the privacy switch, which allowed listeners to enjoy their music without having the sound disturbing others around them.

A cultural icon

While their sound signature may not be considered high-fidelity by modern standards, the SP/3 paved the way for the evolution of portable devices, including headphones, radios or casette players. For the next few decades, the SP/3 would be revered by musicians, sound engineers and audio enthusiasts alike, becoming a cultural icon.

Like many of the items in our Headphone Museum, this headphone forever changed the way people listen to music, inspiring an industry that continues to push the boundaries of sound today.

Want to experience audio history? Come by our store in Heidelberg and explore our Headphone Museum!

Meze Audio POET – A new milestone in the portfolio

With the POET, Meze Audio is expanding its range with an open, planar-magnetic headphone that is positioned between the 109 Pro and the high-end Empyrean II and Elite models. The aim was to close the gap between these models and create a product for discerning audiophiles who appreciate musical sound quality, first-class workmanship and high wearing comfort.

Design and Workmanship

The Meze POET remains true to the manufacturer’s design philosophy: timeless, elegant and high-quality. The combination of magnesium for the ear cups and a titanium alloy for the headband ensures stability at a weight of just 350 g. Thanks to the wide, ergonomically shaped suede headband, the contact pressure is evenly distributed, ensuring comfort even during longer listening sessions.

Visually, the POET combines elements from the top models Empyrean and Elite with borrowings from the closed Liric. Its open ear cups are fitted with a copper-coloured steel grille reminiscent of the Elite’s pattern. The infinitely variable height adjustment of the headband uses a tried-and-tested friction system without a ratchet – occasional readjustment may be necessary.

Sustainability also plays a role: all components of the POET are screwed together and can be replaced if necessary. This not only makes it more environmentally friendly, but also allows for long-term maintenance.

Technology and Sound

The POET utilises the new Rinaro MZ6 Isodynamic® Hybrid Array driver, a further development of the award-winning technology from the Elite and Liric models. The driver has been specially optimised for the POET and delivers high-resolution reproduction with minimal distortion (<0.05%). With a frequency response of 4 Hz to 96 kHz, the finest details are reproduced precisely.

A technical highlight is the Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS) from Dan Clark Audio, which is being used for the first time in headphones outside of the company’s own product line. This technology improves high-frequency reproduction and eliminates unwanted peaks, resulting in a smoother and more balanced sound signature.

With the POET, Meze Audio presents a headphone that combines audiophile performance, exceptional design and innovative technology – an exciting addition to the premium segment.

Driver

The design of the driver in the POET is a special feature: the oval, asymmetrical construction combines a switchback coil for the bass range with a spiral coil for mids and highs. This arrangement enables precise and delay-free sound transmission directly into the ear canal, which benefits spatial imaging and transparency.

Scope of Delivery

The POET is supplied in a stylish black hard case that securely stores the headphones and the supplied cable. The 2.5 metre long premium copper cable with a 6.3 mm jack plug impresses with its flexibility and pleasant feel – it remains tangle-free and has a high-quality feel. However, a larger selection of cable options would be desirable, for example with a 4.4 mm balanced connection, as is the case with models such as the Liric.

Wearing Comfort

Typical for Meze Audio, the POET offers excellent wearing comfort. The wide, ergonomic headband distributes the weight evenly, while the soft ear pads remain comfortable even during long listening sessions. The ear cups are slightly more compact than those of the flagship Empyrean and Elite models, but still offer enough space for most ears.

Sound Quality

The Meze POET is characterised by a warm, musical sound signature that is particularly predestined for acoustic music and classical music. But instead of analytical precision, the focus is on the emotional listening experience – typical of Meze Audio. The bass is controlled and focusses on the mid-bass. Low bass is of course also present, but rather restrained, making the POET less suitable for bass-intensive genres such as EDM or hip-hop. Instead, it impresses with acoustic music with a clear punch and fast response, with bass drums sounding defined and powerful.

The mids are the heart of the POET: they sound full-bodied, detailed and slightly emphasised. Vocals benefit from this tuning and sound particularly natural and expressive – female vocals in particular are shown to their best advantage. Acoustic instruments are also reproduced with precision and nuance, while distorted guitars in rock and metal genres occasionally seem a little overpowering.

The treble is well balanced and offers a pleasant brilliance without being obtrusive. As a result, the POET remains pleasant even over long listening sessions. However, the treble does lack a certain airy width – an area in which the Elite, for example, is superior.

The sound stage of the POET is rather compact and intimate. This can provide a particularly direct reproduction for smaller ensembles or jazz recordings. At the same time, it lacks the expansive spatiality offered by models such as the Elite or Empyrean. Separation is good and individual instruments can be clearly differentiated. The resolution is at a high level, but does not quite reach the depth of detail of the Meze flagships. Overall, the POET offers a harmonious, musical reproduction with a high level of long-term listening comfort and a sound signature focussed on emotions.

Conclusion

With the POET, Meze Audio closes the gap between mid-range and high-end headphones and combines proven technologies such as the Rinaro drivers with innovative features such as the AMTS system from Dan Clark Audio.

In terms of sound, the POET impresses with a warm, musical tuning that brings out the best in acoustic music and classical music in particular. On the other hand, those looking for maximum detail or pronounced low bass will be happier with an Elite or Empyrean – albeit at a significantly higher price.

Thanks to luxurious materials, excellent workmanship and high wearing comfort, the POET is an exciting choice for audiophiles who appreciate emotional sound. With a price tag of around €2,000 it offers a strong overall package in the high-end segment.

There’s something exciting about the first big audio launches of the year. This month, Meze Audio, Abyss, and Astell&Kern have set quite the standard with three extraordinary releases. Whether you seek precision, power, or pure musicality, these new arrivals promise to redefine your listening experience.

Each one has its own unique magic, drawing you in and making everything else fade away as you just listen. Let’s dive in!

Meze Audio POET – A Symphony of Emotion & Precision

Some headphones impress you with sheer technical prowess, but POET does something more. It makes you feel. Every note, from the deepest lows to the most delicate highs, resonates with breathtaking clarity and warmth.

At its core is the MZ6 Isodynamic® Hybrid Array driver, inspired by the cutting-edge technology of LIRIC and ELITE. Enhanced with the Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS) developed originally by Dan Clark Audio, POET refines high frequencies for a smoother, more immersive sound signature.

But what really stands out is the comfort and craftsmanship – though that’s hardly a surprise, coming from Meze. The magnesium chassis, titanium alloy headband, and precision-cut steel grille make it ultra-light yet robust, while the soft suede leather headrest and magnetic ear pads ensure effortless all-day wear. It’s a blend of artistry and engineering that Meze Audio has already mastered.

Abyss JOAL – The Jack of All Listening

If POET is an emotional experience, JOAL is a time machine. Abyss describes it as “the master tape for every song,” as it extracts every last detail from a recording, revealing layers of depth you never knew existed. Whether it’s jazz, rock, EDM, or classical, JOAL makes it sound alive.

Abyss’ patented planar driver technology delivers full-range detail, deep bass, and a truly immersive spatial experience. It’s like sitting in the recording studio itself, hearing every breath of the vocalist, every pluck of a string, every echo of the room.

And then there’s the build. Designed and crafted in New York, JOAL features:

  • Lightweight CNC-machined aluminum frame for durability
  • Magnetic headband for an adaptive, secure fit
  • Plush Ultrasuede earpads for comfortable listening sessions

This is Abyss’ most accessible high-end headphone yet, but don’t mistake that for compromise. It’s pure sonic bliss.

Nowadays, more and more people are using headphones, especially when travelling. To listen to music, of course, but also increasingly to reduce everyday noise and to block out the background noise around them as much as possible – whether on the bus, train, airplane or even just when going for a walk.

Headphones with ‘active noise cancelling’, or ‘ANC’ for short, have become especially popular in recent years. This technology is particularly common in true wireless in-ear headphones and almost every reputable manufacturer of these in-ears has models with ANC in its product range now. However, this technology has also been available in over-ear headphones for a long time and this form of noise cancellation is also very popular here.

What is ‘ANC’ and how does it work?

Well, here’s how it works:

Technically speaking, this is known as the ‘anti-noise principle’, which states that sound waves are (supposed to be) neutralized with other sound waves. Headphones with ANC technology use one or more built-in microphones to measure the ambient volume and then calculate the proportion of these sounds that would still reach the ear or remain there.

To compensate for this, a so-called ‘reverse polarity signal’ is then generated in the headphones to cancel out these sound waves as much as possible. In the ear, the noise from the outside and the signal from the headphones then meet as sound. Ideally, this results in a significant reduction in the perceived noise. If, for example, music is being played at the same time, the listener is virtually unaware of his or their surroundings.

For technical reasons, ANC is particularly effective at suppressing low frequencies, such as engine or road noises, or the usual noises on public transport or in airplanes. However, active noise cancellation has also become very effective in the mid and high frequency ranges (e.g. human voices). This can be very pleasant if you simply want to switch off your surroundings at the touch of a button and/or want to withdraw and isolate yourself from the rest of the world and simply enjoy your music.

Thus, ANC can be very helpful and pleasant in everyday office life. A positive side effect is that you don’t have to turn your music up very loud, as ambient noise is practically no longer a disruptive factor. This means that you can also protect your hearing with and through ANC, which can and will pay off in the long term.

Of course, ANC also has a few ‘risks’. For example, you should not use it if you are actively involved in road traffic, whether on a bike or even in a car if you are behind the wheel. You are simply so cut off from the environment that you can no longer hear important sounds or warning signals in traffic, which can obviously be very dangerous.

Audiophile sound purists are also often sceptical about ANC, when it comes to pure sound quality. On the one hand, this may be because Bluetooth headphones generally still do not (or cannot) match the quality of wired/passive headphones, but on the other hand it is also because activated ANC often leads to a minimal change in the tuning of the headphones.

This usually results in a slight increase in the low frequencies, which leads to less ‘airiness’ and ‘stage’ in the sound. This may not bother many of ANC Bluetooth headphones buyers, especially as they are regularly used outdoors and an increase in the bass can also be perceived as ‘pleasant’ there, but it might be an issue for those looking for the best sound.

What is Passive Noise Cancelling (PNC)?

All of this contrasts with the purely passive isolation of headphones, known as ‘PNC’ (Passive Noise Cancelling). Here, we also talk about reducing external noise, but not through technology or software, but simply through the passive isolation properties of headphones in general. The sound here is not ‘artificially’ altered by a DSP or electrical components or interferences, so you still get the pure sound of the actual headphones in your ears – and nothing else.

Of course, batteries are not needed for this either. External noise is reduced completely passively – by the combination of the ear pads and the clamping pressure of the headphones themselves. This is referred to as getting the best possible ‘seal’ around the ears.

Good passive insulation can be a quality feature of good headphones and is particularly appreciated by audiophiles. Although this kind of noise reduction can never be quite as effective as with good ANC, it can also be a positive thing if you are not completely isolated from your environment.

If you would like to read more about ‘PNC’, I would like to recommend you check out this article:

In conclusion, there is no definitive ‘better’ or ‘worse’ when it comes to ANC vs PNC. Depending on the situation and the intended use case, one or the other has its advantages and disadvantages. Commuters on public transport will certainly appreciate good ANC, while music lovers at home will certainly be happier with a good passive isolation and usually slightly better sound quality along the way.

The hi-fi industry is evolving, and as we look ahead to 2025, I see an exciting opportunity for manufacturers to push boundaries. Not just in sound quality, but in how their products feel, look, and fit into our lives.

In this piece, I want to share some key trends that I believe could transform the user experience, from smarter connectivity to sleeker designs and better ergonomics. Which of these trends do you think will have the biggest impact? Let’s dive in!

1. Expanded Analog Outputs on DACs

Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) are a cornerstone of any modern hi-fi system, converting digital audio into the analog signals required by amplifiers. Most DACs today feature one pair of balanced XLR outputs and one pair of unbalanced RCA outputs. However, this setup limits flexibility, particularly for headphone enthusiasts who often switch between tube and solid-state amplifiers depending on their preferences.

What I’d like to see:

  • Additional sets of XLR and RCA outputs, enabling users to connect multiple amplifiers directly to one DAC without requiring external switchers or preamplifiers.
  • The capability to independently enable or disable each output, allowing users to isolate specific connections without unplugging cables or using additional hardware.
  • Independent volume control setup for each output when the DAC includes preamp functionality, ensuring tailored signal levels for each connected amplifier or system.

Such enhancements would simplify multi-amp configurations, making it easier to leverage the full potential of a high-quality DAC.

2. Reinventing Remote Controls

Remote controls are a universal part of modern hi-fi gear, yet they often fall short of the design and quality standards of the main components. The generic plastic remotes commonly bundled with even premium systems fail to complement the luxury feel of high-end equipment.

What I’d like to see:

  • Premium materials like aluminum, wood, or even leather, paired with thoughtful ergonomics to create a tactile and visually appealing experience.
  • Rotary-style remotes for amplifiers, providing intuitive control over volume and source selection, enhanced by haptic feedback.
  • Expanded app-based control options for users who prefer managing their systems digitally, while maintaining high-quality physical remotes for traditionalists.

A well-crafted remote is more than just functional; it reflects the attention to detail that defines high-end audio.

3. Desktop-Friendly Hi-Fi Furniture

The rise of compact, desktop-friendly hi-fi components, particularly in the headphone world, has outpaced the availability of suitable furniture to accommodate them. Many enthusiasts find themselves improvising with makeshift solutions to organize DACs, streamers, and headphone amplifiers on their desks.

What I’d like to see:

  • High-end hi-fi furniture manufacturers to offer desktop racks designed specifically for smaller components.
  • Modular designs that allow users to stack and organize gear efficiently while maintaining easy access to controls and connections.
  • Premium materials and finishes that match the aesthetic of high-end audio equipment, ensuring a cohesive and stylish setup.

A well-designed desktop rack would elevate the presentation and usability of compact systems, appealing to audiophiles who value both form and function.

4. Shorter Cable Options for All Types of Connections

Cable clutter is a persistent challenge in hi-fi setups, particularly when dealing with stacked components. Most manufacturers offer cables in standard lengths, which can be excessive for compact setups where components are arranged in close proximity.

What I’d like to see:

  • Shorter options for power, interconnects, and digital cables, especially for desktop-friendly systems. For example, cables as short as 20–50 cm would suffice for devices stacked directly on top of each other.
  • Modular cable designs allowing users to customize lengths based on their specific setup.

These changes would not only improve aesthetics but also enhance functionality by minimizing excess cable length and potential interference.

5. Replacing LCD Displays with OLED Screens

Displays on many hi-fi components serve as the primary interface for users, providing crucial information such as input/output selection, volume level, and track details. Unfortunately, many devices still rely on LCD screens, which lack the contrast, viewing angles, and benefits of modern OLED technology.

What I’d like to see:

  • OLED screens on all hi-fi components that include a display. OLED offers superior contrast, deeper blacks, and better visibility from off-center angles, making it ideal for audio gear that isn’t always viewed head-on.
  • Thoughtful integration of displays, ensuring they enhance usability without being intrusive or overly bright in dimly lit listening environments.

As OLED technology becomes more accessible and less prone to burn-in, it’s time for the industry to move away from outdated LCD displays.

Conclusion: Hi-Fi for a Modern Age

The hi-fi industry’s future isn’t just about technical advancements, it’s about making gear that truly works for the people who use it.  By expanding DAC outputs, redesigning remote controls, offering shorter cables, introducing desktop-friendly furniture, and adopting OLED screens, manufacturers can create an experience that’s as enjoyable to use as it is to listen to.

I believe 2025 could be the year hi-fi systems become more than just a listening experience – they could become a seamless part of our daily lives, combining exceptional sound with thoughtful, user-focused design.

For audiophiles, describing sound is more than just a skill, it’s an art. Whether you’re raving about the warmth of vinyl, the crisp sparkle of high-end IEMs, or debating the nuances of planar magnetic vs. dynamic drivers, the language we use to convey sonic experiences transforms abstract sensations into relatable stories.

But where did these terms come from, what do they mean, and how can you use them like a pro? Let’s dive into the colorful world of sonic descriptors.

The Origins of Audiophile Jargon

Audiophiles didn’t invent the concept of describing sound, but they certainly refined it. Early sound descriptors often emerged from the recording industry, where engineers needed precise ways to communicate tonal balance, dynamics, and clarity. Over time, as high-fidelity audio gained a cult following, audiophiles borrowed and expanded this vocabulary to encompass everything from hardware performance to the subtle emotional impact of music.

Words like “warm,” “bright,” or “detailed” may seem straightforward, but they carry a history steeped in experimentation, debate, and shared passion. Each term reflects the community’s collective pursuit of perfection in sound.Essential Words in the Audiophile Lexicon

Here’s a breakdown of some common – and interesting – words audiophiles use, with their meanings and the contexts in which they shine:

  • Warm
A sound that’s rich, smooth, and inviting. Think of the comforting tone of a vintage tube amplifier. “Warmth” often implies a slight boost in bass or midrange frequencies, making vocals or acoustic instruments feel intimate. Fun fact: this term may have gained popularity in the vinyl era, as analog recordings often had a naturally warmer character compared to early digital formats.
  • Bright
The polar opposite of warm, brightness emphasizes treble frequencies, creating a crisp, lively sound. It’s often used to describe headphones or speakers with an emphasis on detail retrieval. While some love the sparkle of brightness, others find it fatiguing over long listening sessions.
  • Neutral
Neutrality is the holy grail for purists who want their music uncolored and faithful to the original recording. A “neutral” sound signature doesn’t favor any particular frequency range, ensuring an accurate presentation of the music.
  • Dark
A darker sound tilts away from treble frequencies, favoring bass and lower mids. This doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of clarity – it’s more about a smooth, relaxed presentation. Some consider dark sound signatures perfect for long, immersive listening sessions.
  • Detailed
A descriptor for gear that reveals minute nuances in a recording – every breath, finger pluck, or faint background sound. This quality is often associated with high-end headphones, DACs, or amplifiers. Audiophiles often debate whether too much detail can detract from musicality.
  • Airy
Airiness refers to the sensation of openness and spaciousness in sound. It’s often linked to treble extension and the ability of a sound system to create a convincing sense of space and separation between instruments.
  • Punchy
The term “punchy” typically describes tight, impactful bass that you can feel but doesn’t overwhelm the mix. Subwoofers and headphones with good transient response often earn this label.
  • Warmth vs. Coldness
While warmth invites nostalgia and comfort, coldness suggests a clinical, precise sound. It’s not inherently bad – it’s just better suited for analytical listeners who value accuracy over emotional resonance.
  • Soundstage
One of the most talked-about terms, soundstage describes the perceived width, depth, and height of the sound field. Great soundstage makes you feel like you’re in the middle of a live performance, with instruments positioned in three-dimensional space. Headphones with open-back designs often excel here.
  • Imaging
Closely tied to soundstage, imaging refers to how accurately a system places individual sounds within the stereo field. Good imaging lets you pinpoint the location of a violin or drum hit as if it were right in front of you.
  • Grainy
Used to critique a less-than-smooth presentation, often in the treble range. Graininess can make digital recordings sound harsh or unnatural.
  • Velvety
A less common term, but one that perfectly captures the silky smoothness of high-quality midrange reproduction. Think sultry jazz vocals or lush strings.

Why Sound Descriptions Matter

Why bother with all this terminology? For one, it bridges the gap between subjective experiences and technical analysis. When you describe a pair of headphones as “airy with excellent imaging,” another audiophile can immediately picture what you mean. Moreover, this language helps you communicate your preferences when shopping for gear or tweaking your setup.

But beyond practicality, describing sound is fun. It’s a way to bond with fellow enthusiasts, share discoveries, and express the joy music brings to your life.

A Word on Subjectivity

While these terms offer a framework, sound remains deeply subjective. What’s “bright” to one listener might be “just right” to another. Cultural and personal experiences also shape how we interpret these terms. The beauty of the audiophile community lies in its diversity of opinions, so don’t be afraid to add your own flair to the conversation!

Building Your Audio Vocabulary

Want to up your game? Start by critically listening to your favorite tracks on different setups. Take notes on what you hear. How would you describe the bass, the mids, the highs? Compare your impressions with reviews or forums to refine your understanding of common terms.

Also, don’t forget the power of metaphor. Some of the most evocative sound descriptions borrow from the world of taste, touch, or even visuals. Is the bass “chewy”? Are the highs “sparkling like champagne bubbles”? The best descriptions don’t just convey sound – they evoke a feeling.

Conclusion

Describing sound is as much about the heart as the ears. It’s a journey of discovery, filled with endless debates, aha moments, and the occasional rabbit hole of audiophile jargon. So, the next time someone asks, “How does it sound?” you’ll have more than just an answer. You’ll have a story.
