Paltauf Audio – KHV ESD II Technology & Tubes

The KHV-ESD thus represents the trio’s universal tube genius. The output signal is generated by two triode-connected TUNG SOL EL84 per channel, in conjunction with a push-pull output transformer from the Swedish manufacturer LUNDAHL, with the signal for the electrostatic headphones tapped directly at the anodes of the end tubes.

The push-pull circuit with output transformer not only provides a sufficiently high operating voltage for all common electrostatic devices at all times but also quite impressive power reserves on the secondary side for all (ortho)dynamic ear loudspeakers, which are typically driven with relatively low signal voltages.

The triode operation also causes the end tubes to be low-impedance, which is responsible for the tube amplifier’s high upper limit frequency, among other things. 

Furthermore, the PALTAUF KHV-ESD has extremely low distortion because the K2 distortions that are primarily produced in the tubes are almost completely eliminated in the output transformer.

The phase reversal stage, which is precisely implemented in the PALTAUF KHV-ESD using semiconductors (Mosfets). It is critical for the proper operation of a push-pull amplifier. This allows two signals to be offset by exactly 180° with perfect phase and amplitude symmetry far beyond the audible range.

An interference-free power supply is also required to ensure excellent signal quality from the tube amplifier at all times. Especially if the output tubes are connected as triodes. Both EL84 pairs include proper stabilization circuitry, as well as a preamp section and phase inversion.

Only in the deep bass does the tube amp fall short of my reference RIVIERA AIC10. Because the latter simply descends a few levels deeper into the frequency range. While also illuminating the farthest corners even more studiously – albeit at a much higher price.

The exceptional musical performance and high functionality. Should more knights of the grail of fine tones fall for the Austrian sirens in the future? It is hoped that Wolfgang Paltauf will not fall too far behind with the manual production of his range of amplifiers. In order to create a truly innovative DAP, not just a great DAP, A&K tried to overcome the limitations of sound by envisioning an independent dual audio circuit that has never been attempted by anyone featuring a HEXA structure with unbalanced and balanced outputs. Almost all other DAPs, including Astell&Kern, use an internal DAC for both unbalanced and balanced outputs. Since the signal from the DAC is divided into unbalanced and balanced then delivered to the AMP, an Audio Switch is essential. However, when using a switch, there is a limit to the range that can receive the signal sent by the DAC, so most DAPs reduce the signal size first and then when the signal is transmitted back to the amplifier, it is necessary to restore the original signal size. This causes a limitation in improving the audio performance. To overcome the limitations, the engineers designed a HEXA structure using two AK4191EQs and four AK4499EXs, creating an innovative unbalanced and balanced independent dual audio circuit design. Amps like the Aegis, that are transformer coupled, possess the ability to output at different impedances to match both objective headphone power needs, and subjective preferences, as well as delivering ample power at the different impedances of each driver. ZMF has headphones of varying needs, that benefit from headroom above their power requirements. The Aegis possesses the power, malleability, and timbral characterizes to make every ZMF and really any dynamic or planar headphone shine.

Being a transformer coupled amp, the Aegis has a LOT of IRON in transformers, chokes, and a huge power supply. All of this means that the “foundation” of sound coming from the Aegis is substantial, and you can hear it.

We may be able to change the aesthetic of the Aegis from time to time, but since we use an OEM to make the Aegis, it will likely be at most changes once per year.

The 4.4mm jack on the Aegis uses a voltage divider, which in layman’s terms means that you can use very sensitive IEMs and headphones on the 4.4mm, and still have full use of the range of the volume knob.

1. Tube amplifiers offer a unique listening experience that is euphonic, natural, and musical made possible by simple circuits with clean signal paths. Most people are shocked at the clarity and spaciousness that tube amplifiers can achieve, it’s something everyone should try at least once. Listening is believing!

2. Generally, single-ended triode amplifiers achieve 3:1 damping ratios, meaning the headphone impedance is at least 3x the output impedance of the amplifier. But some may prefer either higher or lower damping ratios. You can try the various impedance settings and see what sounds best to you with your favorite headphones, there is no hard and fast rule.

3. I learned to design single-ended tube amps by experimentation, coming up with circuit ideas, prototyping them in the real world, then listening and measuring. A high degree of clarity, spaciousness, and musicality can be achieved in a tube amp if following simple design rules. That means keeping signal paths short, the circuits simple, and the distortion relatively low within the confines of single-ended tube design.

4. On average, Aegis is a 2-watt amplifier, although power output will be slightly higher or lower depending on the impedance setting and headphone impedance. Headphone transducers are low power devices requiring power outputs on the order of milliwatts; 2 watts of power is plenty to drive even the most demanding headphones. Power output is a function of the amplifier’s output voltage and the impedance of the headphone transducer; power will vary depending on the impedance setting and the headphone being used. Amplifier gain is the degree to which an amplifier boosts the input signal voltage, usually expressed in decibels (dB).

Connection

The device has four digital inputs (optical, coaxial and HD USB) as well as wireless Bluetooth® technology with extended range. The HD USB input supports playback of high-resolution files up to 768 kHz and up to DSD512 (Octa DSD). The analog outputs include 2x RCA as well as 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm headphone outputs.

Customizable

A four-way switchable filter allows custom frequency shaping for warm and smooth or transparent and sharp reproduction, giving the user additional flexibility and control. For listening through headphones, Hugo 2 retains the popular digital crossfeed feature of the original and offers three modes of operation that duplicate the effect of listening through speakers, based on advanced binaural audio research.

Control

Hugo 2 is equipped with four spherical control buttons that are illuminated with colored information and control the device’s power supply, input, filtering and crossfeed functions.

Endurance

With a battery life of around 6 hours+ (depending on the headphones) and two modes for automatic charging via the dedicated micro USB charging port, Hugo 2 ensures uninterrupted music enjoyment. A display shows the charging and battery status.
